Web video has evolved tremendously over the past few years. From being an anamolous novelty, it has become the de-facto method of communication online. The revolution was started by YouTube, but now, dozens of players have jumped on the bandwagon. YouTube, of course, still remains the king of the hill with several billion streams per month.

To get the maximum exposure for your videos, you should distribute it to as many video sites as possible. Besides the better know players such as YouTube and Hulu (which doesn’t accept user content, by the way), there are a number of smaller, regional video sites that get a large chunk of the web video traffic.

One of the biggest video sites online is DailyMotion. This French site is often called the “YouTube of Europe” and enjoys a very strong membership base. The audience is primarily European, so if you want to expand your viewership base in the continent, this is a site you should definitely upload to.

Vimeo is another site that has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years. Vimeo is special because a majority of the videos found on it are of a high resolution. Vimeo has a great user interface and is fun to use, and offers the option to upload in HD too.

Yet another site is Metacafe. Metacafe has been around for quite some time now and boasts an enviable audience. The user interface may look a bit old, but the site’s audience number makes up for it.

Depending on your video, you can upload it to genre specific sites. If your video is aimed towards the young, male demographic, then uploading it on Break.com would be appropriate. If it is related to technology, then Google Video would be a good site to upload to (as it is quite popular among the tech crowd).

Uploading to as many sites as possible is recommended. It may be a daunting task given the number of video sites online, but to maximize the benefits from videos, it is a must.
